I arrived early and found Goldie and her father in the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had the same folding mirror. Same little case of pins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No braid pooled beside the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No heavy length had to be lifted out of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father gathered two small sections from the front and tried to braid them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goldie watched him in the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You’re making it too tight.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nHe loosened it immediately. “Better?”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
“Better.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added one small ribbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goldie stood up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her hair brushed her shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She turned her head left and right, checking it. “Good?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing caught on the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t grab her hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t look back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father watched her go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nFor a moment, his hand stayed on the little case of pins.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then he closed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought about the promise Goldie’s parents had made years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In one sense, they hadn’t kept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goldie hadn’t waited until 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But watching her run freely down that hallway, I understood that they hadn’t abandoned the promise either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nGoldie had still given her hair.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
She had still done something generous in memory of her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She just wasn’t being asked to carry large bundles of hair to prove that the love was real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father had finally understood something the rest of us had nearly missed too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
