Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old technology leader at The New York Times, built an accomplished career in software engineering, product strategy and management before his life ended in a fatal shooting in Dublin, California, on September 26, 2026. At the time of his death, McKinsey was Director of Engineering for Games Player Experience, a position he had held since December 2025. His professional background stretched across nearly two decades and included roles at Splunk, UKG, Coursera, Oracle and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, as well as an internship with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Georgia Tech and later completed a master’s degree at UC Berkeley, where his interests included the connection between computer science and education. Beyond his technology career, McKinsey was also a father of three. He and his wife, Candice Jang, married in Texas in 2011, but their relationship later became the center of a contentious custody and divorce dispute. Court filings contained serious and competing allegations from both spouses, while McKinsey was also facing misdemeanor child-abuse charges. He pleaded not guilty, and authorities had not established that the family dispute was connected to his killing.
McKinsey’s final months were marked by significant personal and legal turmoil, yet older posts offered glimpses of a very different side of his life. He had written about welcoming his daughter in 2021, describing the frightening moments following her birth and reflecting on race and family. An earlier professional biography also noted that he enjoyed cooking for his family. In August 2026, McKinsey was seeking expanded visitation with his children, saying he deeply missed them and hoped to spend more time with them. His final Facebook profile update came on September 8, just weeks before his death. A message beneath the photograph from someone identified as his father expressed love, said his parents missed him and wished him well with Candice and the children. McKinsey was fatally shot at Dublin Sports Grounds, where authorities later arrested his 76-year-old in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, on suspicion of murder and other offenses. The investigation was ongoing, and officials had not publicly announced a motive. His story therefore encompasses both a substantial professional legacy and a deeply complicated family life that remained unresolved when his life was suddenly cut short.
